You help others all day, who helps you?
Being a therapist can be one of the greatest and most rewarding jobs. You get to help people overcome their fears, help them learn to loves themselves, and be with them as they heal from past experiences. You worked hard to get the job that allows you to help others. And somewhere along the way, you’ve lost yourself. You feel burned out, worried that you aren’t enough, and too exhausted to care for yourself.
Does this sound familiar?
If so, you’re not alone. So many therapists pour into their jobs and serve others. We get told that it is our ethical obligation to take on as much as we can so others don’t suffer. Our jobs, like any job, requires balance. But you feel guilty. Anytime you think about taking a break, you remember that others are struggling and feel the pressure to take it all on. At the expense of your own mental health.
Heck, maybe you even were taught in grad school or have seen other therapists in the field say how selfish it is to do X, Y, or Z so that fear of judgement keeps us stuck in the same cycles that are dooming us.
Instead of daydreaming about other jobs, it is time to nurture your own mental health so you can keep doing the important work you do.
Your needs matter.
You don’t have to leave the field to find peace!

HECK NO! In fact, I think any therapist that goes to therapy is brave and cares about the profession.

Not for me! If you haven't been to therapy before, it can feel awkward the first few sessions but I find that most of my clients are comfortable after the free consult or during the first session.

I get to be the one to worry about that! If we are in the same area, we will talk about how to handle events or seeing each other in public. I will also be the one to minimize dual relationships and protecting your confidentiality.
